Southern California University of Health Sciences President John Scaringe Visits Washington D.C. for Learning & Advocacy
In early February, Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) President Dr. John Scaringe attended the National Association for Independent Colleges & Universities (NAICU) annual conference and legislative advocacy day in our nation’s capitol.
Representing all 1,700 private, nonprofit colleges and universities, NAICU is the only national organization focused exclusively on representing the private, nonprofit higher education sector on public policy issues in Washington, DC.
As part of a coalition from the Association for Independent California Colleges & Universities (AICCU), Dr. Scaringe joined university presidents from across the country to hear from higher ed experts and policy leaders about the evolving regulatory landscape and key higher ed priorities for the new Congress and White House.
In addition, he joined several of his peers in private meetings with House and Senate members, where he discussed the critical importance of integrative whole health education, SCU’s impact on the local economy and broader healthcare landscape, and the potential positive and negative impacts of current proposed policies on the quality of education and student success.
Engaging discussions with California Congressional representatives and higher ed officials reinforced the critical need to strengthen the Pell Grant, protect Federal Work-Study and SEOG, and secure federal support for nonprofit institutions affected by the LA fires.
