Biography
Joseph “Joey” Wilcox, PhD is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Genetics and Genomics at Southern California University of Health Sciences. He has been an instructor in the collegiate life sciences since 2015, and has a passion for science communication and education. He previously served as the Bioinformatics Outreach Coordinator for the IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) which focused on bringing Bioinformatics, Genomics, and Data Science to underrepresented and underserved communities. He also served as a critical member of the Community of Bilingual English Spanish Speakers (CBESS), who’s main goal was to provide research training and job shadowing experiences in the realms of medicine and science research to first-generation students.
In addition, he has collaborated with numerous research agencies, namely the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), and National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) creating materials and modules, workshops, “boot camps”, short courses and full semester coursework for students, faculty, and the research community. Most recently he was part of a collaboration with Johns Hopkins University to create the Genomic Data Science Community Network (GD-SCN), a hub of information and resources.
Dr. Wilcox received his Bachelors of Science in Cell/Molecular Biology from University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV) and his Doctorate in Cell/Molecular Biology with an emphasis in Bioinformatics from the University of Nevada – Reno (UNR).
