Dr. Karina Madrigal brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to advancing interprofessional education (IPE) as the Dean for Interprofessional Education at Southern California University of Health Sciences. With a distinguished career spanning 18 years in education, Dr. Madrigal has held a variety of pivotal roles, showcasing her expertise and dedication to fostering collaborative learning environments.
Before assuming her current position, Dr. Madrigal served as the Assistant Dean for Interprofessional Education at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, where she played a crucial role in shaping innovative IPE initiatives. Her multifaceted background includes positions as core faculty, education development specialist, faculty development director, and founding director of the MedEd Teaching Certificate Program, reflecting her diverse skill set and leadership capabilities.
Dr. Madrigal's teaching prowess lies in interprofessional ethical practice, roles and responsibilities, communication, and teamwork, areas where she has made significant contributions through her scholarly activities. She is deeply passionate about equipping students with the collaborative skills necessary to address healthcare disparities in underserved communities, striving to cultivate a new generation of competent and compassionate healthcare professionals.
In addition to her teaching and administrative roles, Dr. Madrigal is actively engaged in scholarly pursuits focused on IPE initiatives and teacher preparation programs. Her professional interests span a wide range of areas, including pedagogical development, competency-based education, curriculum development, assessment enhancement, instructional design, faculty training and development, peer-to-peer teaching observations, teaching best practices programs, education consultations, educational technology integration, and accreditation compliance.
Dr. Madrigal earned her doctoral degree in education from Texas A&M University, complemented by bachelor's and master's degrees in communication from the University of Texas Pan American. She is a distinguished Harvard Macy scholar and serves as a faculty facilitator at Harvard Macy, further enriching her expertise in educational leadership and innovation. Additionally, she holds educator certifications from the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), as well as nationally recognized certifications from the Program for Educators in Health Professions at the Harvard Macy Institute and the Harvard Bok Higher Education Teaching Certificate.
