Learning Theories

Theory into Practice:

There are several learning theories that can support you as an educator and a subject matter expert in your discipline.  Below are three of the major theories in learning.

  • Pedagogy – The approach to student and teacher learning.  Often the student does not have historical knowledge or resources to the course content.
  • Andragogy – The approach to adult learning.  Often the student has life experience and high level of self-directed in gaining knowledge of the course content.
  • Heutagogy – The approach to increase students’ capacity as a self-directed learner.  Learner increases self-efficacy and develops the skill to manage their own learning path.
