In this course, students explore the Ashtanga Hridayam, one of the three major literary works of Ayurveda. This ancient text contains more than 7,000 verses that present Ayurvedic philosophy and teachings in a beautiful, simple, and memorable way.

CARAKA SAMHITA

Written more than 1,500 years ago, the Caraka Saṃhitā is one of the oldest textbooks of Ayurveda, based on the teachings of Ātreya, the founder of Ayurvedic medicine. This profound text provides a comprehensive review of the principles (tatva), theory (sastra) and practice (vyavahara) of Āyurveda while making the case that self-transformation (naiṣṭhikĪcikitsā) is the ultimate solution for all pain and disease.

INTRO TO SANSKRIT

Sanskrit, a sacred language dating back thousands of years, is the language of Ayurveda as well as the language used in mantra chanting. This course gives students an appreciation for the deeper meaning of Sanskrit words, making it easier to navigate SCU’s Ayurveda Wellness Educator and Ayurveda Practitioner program material, and other studies of classical Ayurvedic texts.

YOGA AND MEDITATION FOR HEALTHY LIVING

This course provides a foundational understanding of yoga, including classical yoga philosophies and how to apply them for a happier, healthier life. Students will learn a variety of yoga positions (asanas) to empower the body and help prevent disease; discover yogic breath techniques (pranayama); and explore and practice meditation.
